Philips DVD Players

About Philips

The following DVD players in the Philips range have key feature differentiations highlighted in bold.

This review profiles:

Philips DVP5960/37 DVD Player

The Philips DVP5960/37 is rated by DVD Player reviewers as "a competent player with above average performance".

If you have an HDTV, this player can upconvert standard DVDs to HD resolutions (480p, 720p and 1080i).

The USB port allows you to play video or audio from a media player or hard drive [Note: not every USB device works].

Compatible Disk Formats Supported

CD-R/RW, DVD+R/+RW, DVD-R/-RW

Key Features

  • Single-disc, upconverting DVD player with HDMI.
  • Upconverts to 480p, 720p and 1080i.
  • Coaxial digital audio output.
  • USB port.
  • Plays DVDs, audio CDs, picture CDs and Kodak Picture CD discs.
  • DivX certified.

Estimated Price $US65

A significant issue of this DVD player is that it cannot simultaneously pass surround sound via its digital audio outputs when using HDMI.

in spite of this weakness, overall the Philips DVP5960/37 is a good value, especially for HDTV owners who don't want to splash out too much on a DVD Player until the format war is over.

Philips DVP3140/37 DVD Player

The main advantages of this non-upconverting DVD Player is its performance and ease of use, especially considering the low, low price.

Although it can't upconvert to HD resolutions, the Philips DVP3140 is a sub-$40 DVD player that receives high ratings from dvd player reviewers, after lots of positive user feedback.

The performance is great for a basic DVD player with limited extras. Its ability to play DivX files is an appreciated bonus for this price of dvd player.

Whilst the overall build quality of this dvd player is good, concern is raised over the durability of its super thin disc tray long term.
