OPPO DVD Players
About OPPO
OPPO DVD Players rank very highly in the DVD Player market, with
the two models below scoring top overall DVD Player and best HD-DVD
Player.
Both OPPO DVD players are more expensive compared to the competition,
but their superior image quality make them a favorite amongst DVD
players.
The following DVD players in the OPPO range have key feature differentiations
highlighted in bold.
This review profiles:
OPPO DV-970HD DVD Player
The OPPO DV-970HD is an excellent value, though some dvd player
editors have been disappointed in audio quality through the HDMI
output when connected to a home-theater speaker system. In spite
of this, the OPPO is still highly rated.
The OPPO DV-970HD is the best standard DVD player for the money,
and in aggregated reviews, claimed as the "best DVD player
overall"
For those who don't own an HDTV, the OPPO DVD player has a few
features not always found on DVD players - a USB port allows you
play video from a flash drive or other USB device, and a 4-in-1
card reader is great for displaying photos direct from a memory
card.
The OPPO DV-970HD is also one of the least expensive region-free
DVD players, playing discs from the U.S., Europe and Asia.
The big difference between DV-970HD and the DV-981HD is that the
maximum HD output is 1080i, relying on the HDTV's deinterlacer to
step to 1080p, if needed.

A few owners and professional reviewers claim the DV-970HD feels
flimsy and looks "cheap" in some aspects.
OPPO DV-981HD DVD Player
The OPPO DV-981HD upconverting DVD player is deemed by most dvd
player reviewers as an "excellent option for HDTV owners"
wanting to wait until the high-def DVD format war is settled. Although
it is expensive for a non-high-definition DVD player, critics say
that the OPPO DV-981HD's performance with standard-definition DVDs
is unbeatable in image quality.
If you have one of the latest 1080p HDTVs, the OPPO can upscale
standard DVD resolution up to full 1080p, and described by reviewers
as terrific.
A key feature for DVD enthusiasts is that the region-free OPPO
DV-981HD can also play audio formats - DVD-A and SACD discs.
The OPPO DV-981HD matches or betters the performance of high-end
DVD players costing much more.
NOTE: you need an HDMI-capable TV to get the benefit of this DVD
player, since there are no component video outputs.
The HDMI output can send multichannel DVD-Audio and SACD (Super
Audio Compact Discs) to an HDMI-equipped audio receiver.

One issue with this DVD Player is processor macroblocking [artifact
where transitions between shades of a color are not smooth] problems,
particularly with DLP TVs [not noted with non-DLP TV]. Not all reviewers
noted this in their tests.
