Car Security Systems
In the USA, a car gets broken into every 20 seconds.
And the stats for other countries is not that much better. In the
UK, the Home Office reports that although vehicle crime has fallen
by 57% since 1995 it still accounts for about a sixth of all crime
and has an annual economic and social cost of £2 billion.
That’s 2 million vehicle related thefts every year.
Whilst theft of the car is decreasing, theft of car GPS
navigation equipment and number plates are growing significantly.
Stealing your car identity can result in you receiving fixed penalty
notices for parking and speeding or worse, you may even be suspected
of committing crimes.
Preventing Car & Content Theft
Taking portable satellite navigation equipment with you every
time you leave your car is not practical, yet that is what is advised.
And on top of that it is recommended that you remove the cradle
and suction pads AND clean any marks left on the windscreen or dashboard
as thieves are known to look for these telltale signs and break
in anyway, expecting to find the equipment stowed in the glove compartment.
A better option is the standard fitting of alarms and immobilisers
to all new vehicles. Alarms are an effective deterrent to both car
theft and theft from your vehicle. In addition, it is highly recommended
that alarms are installed in conjunction with electronic engine
immobilisers.
Many older cars are retro-fitting combined alarm and engine immobilising
systems. The Motor Insurance Repair Research Centre (MIRRC), also
known as Thatcham,
recommends a category one system which includes a 3-part
system that:
- switches on automatically when you leave the car
- has an "anti-scan" key-code system
- has a battery backed-up siren.
Engine Immobilisers
Engine immobilisers can be fitted on their own, as part of a car
alarm system or your existing car alarm system can be upgraded to
include one. It is also important that the car alarm and engine
immobilising systems are fitted properly to your car.
Car Alarm Systems
Car alarm systems have three major components:
- Electronic Sensors
- Warning Alarm Indicators
& Sirens
- Remote-Activation
